In anticipation of “Frida Kahlo 2020” coming to the new Cleve Carney Museum of Art and MAC June-Aug. 2020, New Philharmonic’s April concerts will celebrate the rhythms and sounds of Mexico with a program featuring works by Mexican-born composers. Selections will include Mexican composer Agustín Lara’s “Granada,” a work that has been covered by everyone from acclaimed Mexican tenor Néstor Mesta Cháyres to Frank Sinatra to Placido Domingo; “Como aunque Culpa” by Manuel de Zumaya, one of the most famous Mexican composer of the colonial period of New Spain; “Danzon” by Arturo Márquez, recipient of the National Prize for Arts and Sciences (Mexico); and “Noche de Encantamiento” by noted Mexican composer, conductor and violinist Silvestre Revueltas Sánchez. The program will also include “Misa Tango” by Academy Award-winning Argentine-born composer Luis Bacalov. “Misa Tango” sets a Spanish-language adaptation of the classic liturgical Mass to the dance rhythms of the tango and features soprano and tenor vocalists, a 100-voice chorus, as well as the bandoneon accordion.
