An active presence in the jazz world since the 1970s and hailed as “a mesmerizing player” by Jazzwise, bass player and Northwestern alumnus Rufus Reid has recorded over 500 albums, including recordings with Dexter Gordon, Andrew Hill, the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Quartet, Stan Getz, and J. J. Johnson. A versatile composer, Reid has written music for strings, chamber ensembles, solo bass, jazz ensembles, and symphony orchestras. Among his honors and awards are a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, a MacDowell Colony Grant, and two Grammy nominations for his 2014 release Quiet Pride—The Elizabeth Catlett Project. Also a respected educator, Reid is the author of The Evolving Bassist, a book which remains the industry standard for double bass methodology.
