Gypsy – A Musical Fable is a classic Broadway musical with music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and a book by Arthur Laurents. Inspired by the memoirs of famed burlesque performer Gypsy Rose Lee, the show tells the compelling and dramatic story of Rose, an ambitious stage mother determined to make her daughters into stars.
Set in the 1920s and 1930s, the musical follows Rose as she tirelessly pushes her younger daughter, June, into vaudeville stardom. However, when June rebels and leaves the act, Rose shifts her focus to her less talented, overlooked daughter, Louise. Over time, Louise is thrust into the world of burlesque and, against all odds, transforms into the elegant and sophisticated Gypsy Rose Lee, becoming a star on her own terms.
At its heart, Gypsy is a powerful exploration of ambition, sacrifice, and the complex relationships between mothers and daughters. With show-stopping numbers like “Everything’s Coming Up Roses,” “Rose’s Turn,” and “Let Me Entertain You,” the musical remains a beloved and enduring classic of American theater.
