Saving Myself tells the story of four young Latina women at a retreat centered around Church-sponsored abstinence-only sex ed. The play explores what it means to be young, Latina, curious and confused about the forbidden topics of your body, sexuality, and sex. In the playwright’s words: “Saving Myself demonstrates just how terrifying it can be for teen girls and young adults to be limited exclusively to abstinence-only education. Some of the fears and anxieties of the characters might seem far-fetched, but these girls are getting these messages, subliminally or not. Saving Myself is also an homage to my own upbringing, as a Mexican-American living in the suburbs of Illinois and growing up in a local church community. All these characters are Latine and yet, so different. We are not a monolith. This play illustrates the diversity within teen Latine groups, including the differences in cultural education.”
